Chimney stacks are the most exposed element of any domestic roof — projecting above the roofline into unobstructed wind, rain and frost. The mortar between the bricks of a chimney stack undergoes more thermal cycling than almost any other part of the building fabric. Over decades, this cycling — expansion in summer heat, contraction in winter cold, freeze-thaw during frosty periods — progressively works the mortar until it crumbles away.
